Cultural Resources Compliance Officer (Historian 2) – Job Announcement /Do you have a passion for Montana history?/ /Do you want to join an agency full of committed, inspired individuals?/ The Montana State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) seeks a detail-oriented and collegial person to work as a Review and Compliance Officer. The Cultural Resources Compliance Officer is a full-time position. The hourly rate will increase $1.50 per hour starting July 1, 2024, in accordance with HB13. Duties include but are not limited to: * Protection of cultural resources per the National Historic Preservation Act and Montana State Antiquities Act. Common resources included historic mining and industrial properties, rural properties, community historic district, railroads, irrigation features, bridges, roads, and trails. * Use of National Register eligibility criteria to determine a cultural resource's National Register eligibility. * Review and comment on adequacy of a consulting party's identification and recordation of cultural resources. * Issuing determinations of an undertaking’s effect to historic properties. * Working with others to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse effects to cultural resources. * Working with others in the office who review undertakings, nominate properties to the National Register, plan outreach events, and maintain a database of cultural sites in Montana. The successful candidate will have: * Knowledge of the Section 106 process, and preservation principles and philosophies. * An understanding of Northern Plains and Rocky Mountain history and knowledge of research, survey and inventory methods, as gained through formal education, and/or work experience. * Experience in applied or public history, or cultural resources management. * Experience conducting historical research, and appropriate review of another's work. * Knowledge of National Register eligibility criteria.
